Due to hit cinemas this week is director Yuthlert Sippapaks long- awaited Buppha Rahtree 3.1 (Rahtree Reborn), the third installment of his cult comedy-horror Buppha Rahtree franchise.

The latest film takes viewers back to the haunted apartment room 609 and the vengeful ghost Buppah who refuses to be dislodged.

Judging by the films trailer and posters, Rahtree Reborn looks to be the most gruesome film in the series so far, with more gore and pools of blood than ever.

The sexy female ghost is once again played by 26-year-old Chermarn Boonyasak (Ploy). Her hapless victim this time is 20-year-old heart-throb Mario Maurer. The two stars previously acted together in the 2007 film, The Love of Siam.

Student Weekly recently met up with Ploy and Mario at a press conference to hear about the horror and the laughs in Rahtree Reborn.

STUDENT WEEKLY: How did it feel acting together again?

Mario: I played Ploys brother in The Love of Siam, but in Rahtree Reborn I got to fall in love with her. [Laughs.] Its always an honour to work with Ploy.

Ploy: It was nice to act with Mario again. Hes a cool guy. Mario is still new to acting, but he did a great job on this film.

STUDENT WEEKLY: Mario, what is your character in the film like?

Mario: I play Rung, a young cartoonist who moves into the haunted apartment. He has a supernatural ability to see ghosts, but when he meets Buppha, he develops a crush on her. He doesnt realise that shes the one he should be avoiding!

STUDENT WEEKLY: Were you a fan of the other Buppah Rahtree films?

Mario: Absolutely. I saw the first two movies at the cinema, and I have the DVD box set at home. The Buppah Rahtree films have their own unique style. I didnt expect to be chosen to act in the third film, so it was a blast for me.

STUDENT WEEKLY: Is acting in a horror movie more difficult than working on teen dramas?

Mario: Its a lot different. The script was more complicated, and I had to take some acting classes. The director was very helpful throughout the shoot.

STUDENT WEEKLY: Ploy, did you intend to make Buppha more beautiful than in the previous films?

Ploy: Yes. [Laughs.] I wanted to change the character a bit. She isnt just an innocent young girl anymore she has long hair and wears eyeliner, which makes her look more mysterious. There are also parts of the movie when Buppha is very scary.

STUDENT WEEKLY: Does Buppha have a new weapon in every film?

Ploy: Yes. She uses a handsaw on the first movie, and a big needle in the second one. This time she uses astraight razor to cut Marios throat. [Laughs].

STUDENT WEEKLY: What makes Rahtree Reborn different from other horror films?

Ploy: It has more variety. Youll sit on the edge of your seat with fear, but you might also fall off your seat laughing. The films full of classic jokes.

Mario: It also has some romance, too. Fans of the first two films definitely shouldnt miss this one.

Student Weekly also asked director Yuthlert Sippapak a few questions about the film.

STUDENT WEEKLY: The Thai title of the movie is Buppah Rahtree 3.1. What does 3.1 mean?

Yuthlertu The movie is divided into two parts. Buppah Rahtree 3.2 should be coming out in June.

STUDENT WEEKLY: What made you pick Mario for this film?

Yuthlert: His look and quiet personality perfectly suited the character that I created.

STUDENT WEEKLY: Do you see Buppah Rahtree as mainly a ghost story or a love story?

Yuthlert: Its more of a love story, showing that love never dies. The audience also seems to enjoy the horror and the comedy.

We had mixed feedback when the first Buppha Rahtree movie came out. It was pretty scary, so we added more comedy into the second film. For the third one, we just did whatever we wanted!
